A GUIDE FOR DOG WALKERS

At IJG Trails, we have a vibrant community of walkers and their dogs. Walking your dog outdoors is essential for their physical and mental health. It provides necessary exercise, mental stimulation through exploring new sights and smells, and helps maintain a strong bond between you and your pet, making it a crucial aspect of responsible dog ownership.

Our Trailhead is welcoming to dogs, who often outnumber the people. There is a small dog pond where they can cool off, and during the rainy season, our little earth dam fills up, bringing joy to the ‘water’ dogs.

Most of our walkers choose to walk their dogs off-leash, so all dogs must be non-aggressive and well-socialized. If you need professional help to equip yourself with the skills to socialise your dog safely, please check out our community page.

Due to the high concentration of dogs at the entrances, we kindly ask that you pick up after your dog. We have installed waste bins along the two main jeep tracks that converge at the trail head. While we provide small bags for this purpose, it would be greatly appreciated if you could bring your own to help us conserve resources.

Please ensure that your dog’s vaccinations, deworming treatments, and tick and flea treatments are up to date. Since we are located in a natural environment, diseases such as rabies and tick-bite fever are always a possibility.

BOOTCAMP BARKERS

Founded by Happy Dog School in March 2024, Bootcamp Barkers meets near the Kleine Kuppe Gate on Saturday mornings. Offering advanced, force-free dog training. Classes include whistle recalls, hide and seek, distance control, and loose leash walking, all refined with clicker training. The session ends with a calming down exercise on the lawn and a cup of coffee.

CONDUCT RULES FOR DOG WALKERS

1. Only well-socialized and non-aggressive dogs are allowed. Please consider that another trail user may not be as fond of dogs and that people, especially small children, can find dogs intimidating.

2. Dogs must be kept in sight and under control at all times. All dogs must wear a collar with identification and contact details and have up-to-date vaccinations as contact with people, other dogs, livestock and game is likely.

3. All dog waste must be collected and properly disposed of in the green bins along the paths around the entrance areas. Consider all trail users (runners, cyclists, walkers) and keep the trails in clean and tidy condition.

4. Dogs must be kept under close control where livestock or game are present. Permitting your dog to chase, injure, or kill any form of wildlife or livestock is an offence. In the event that dogs are threatening or interfering with wildlife or the enjoyment of other trail users, the owner and their dog(s) will be instructed to leave the farm, and the respective ‘membership’/ ’subscription’/ ’visitor pass’ of relevant dog owners may be cancelled in certain instances, and at the discretion of the IJG Trails team.
